Abigail Anthony Chamungwana, known professionally as Abigail Chams born on May 7, 2003, in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, is a talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and youth advocate. Growing up in a musical family, she was surrounded by creativity from a young age her grandfather directed an orchestra while her grandmother sang in the church choir. These early influences sparked Abigail’s love for music and inspired her to explore multiple instruments. By age five, she was learning the piano, and by eight, she had mastered the violin. She later added guitar, drums, and flute to her repertoire, making her a highly versatile musician.
From childhood, Abigail demonstrated an extraordinary passion for music, performing at school events and recording covers of popular songs on social media. These early videos showcased her vocal range and instrumental skills, helping her gain a growing online following. Balancing her education with her music, she honed her songwriting and composition abilities, developing a sound that blends Bongo Flava, Afropop, R&B, and contemporary African rhythms.
Her professional breakthrough came in 2022, when she signed with Sony Music Entertainment Africa, marking a major milestone in her career. Abigail released her debut EP, “5”, in 2023, which features hit singles such as Milele and Nani?, as well as collaborations with prominent East African artists. Her music often combines Swahili and English, delivering heartfelt lyrics that resonate with young audiences while celebrating African culture.
Beyond her artistry, Abigail is a dedicated youth advocate. She works with UNICEF and runs “The Talk With Abigail Chams”, a platform focused on mental health awareness and empowering young people. At just 22, she has earned international recognition, including becoming the first solo female East African artist nominated for a BET Award. Abigail Chams continues to rise as one of Tanzania’s most promising and influential contemporary artists, combining musical talent with meaningful social impact.
